The special attraction of Lewiston Lake is its quality fly fishing for rainbow trout. The lake is also popular with trollers and bank anglers.
A 10-mile per hour speed limit has also made the lake popular with float tubers and canoeists.
Swimmers generally find the water too cold for comfort. The area offers excellent wildlife viewing for bald eagle, osprey, otter, and deer.
Ruth Lake in southwest Trinity County continues to be a secret, even though the trout, kokanee, bass, bluegill and catfishing is excellent during their respective seasons. Consistent afternoon winds make the lake popular with sailors. Campsites dot the shoreline, and overnight lodging and dining is nearby.
Trinity Lake, the third-largest reservoir in California, is over 26 miles long with 147 miles of shoreline.
Houseboaters enjoy pulling into a secluded cove for a barbecue, a warm afternoon swim, and for the quiet of a wilderness setting.
Anglers fish the mouths of the streams and the rocky shorelines for rainbow trout, smallmouth and largemouth bass, and catfish, while waterskiers prefer the smooth, glassy surface in the middle of the lake.
Private resorts and Forest Service campgrounds offer services from comfortable housekeeping cabins to rustic campgrounds.
Four marinas offer houseboat, skiboat, fishing boat, canoe and jet ski rentals.
Two RV Parks offer full hookups at the water's edge, and overnight boat moorage for guests.
The Trinity River ranges from stretches of calm flatwater to raging rapids and cascades.
Salmon, steelhead and trophy-sized brown trout are prized by anglers worldwide, and amateur gold panners can find "color" along the shoreline. The picturesque river gorge follows much of Highway 299 and Highway 3, and is spectacular when wild flowers bloom in the spring, and during the brilliant fall foliage in the autumn.
